“I’m all that’s left, I’m doing the best I can”
I was asked by Lady Aurora to shoot her genderbent version of Future Trunks from Dragon Ball Z. While I am a fan of the show, finding a suitable location similar to Dragon Ball Z’s styling was pretty tough. In the end I settled for the red rocks and caves of Pinnacles National Park in Paicines, CA.
For my gear, I decided on a one camera, one lens setup using the Sony A7rII and the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens. I wanted to minimize lens swapping which could introduce dust onto the sensor, and I also wanted to focus on minimal equipment since it was a hike!
After the long drive, we were greeted with a moderate hike to reach the rocks and a not so pleasant 100°F day. Even with many breaks along the way, it was a sweaty struggle to get to the first shooting location.
Thankfully, it was significantly cooler near the caves. The caves also provided a nice location as well! Shooting here took some time since the path was narrow and there were other hikers making their way through.
After the caves, we packed it up and called it a day. It would have been nice to get to the high peaks for more epic shots, but we were running out of time and needed to catch the last shuttle back to the visitor center.
Overall a fun, albeit exhausting shoot. I hope that you enjoy the photos!
